Comparing under eye treatments: PRF Injections vs. EZ Gel Injections.
PRF in the making
At Skinbeam, we provide both Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) injections and EZ Gel injections, and these are most commonly desired for under eye rejuvenation. In a nutshell, EZ Gel is made from PRF which is a watery consistency, whereas EZ Gel contains PRF but is prepared into a gel consistency. There are several other key differences and similarities between them.
Let’s begin with how they are similar. Plain PRF and EZ Gel are regenerative to the skin and underlying tissue. They both kickstart the body’s healing cascade, provide 7-10 days of growth factor release under the skin, and contain stem cells, activated platelets and beneficial exosomes. Both stimulate collagen production in the area injected, which takes 90 days to result. PRF injections and EZ Gel injections contain no pharmaceuticals and are completely natural - made from your own blood products using a centrifuge and in the case of EZ Gel: temperature differences (that’s what makes it into a gel). Both products volumize the under eye (or other area) temporarily, providing a shorter-acting “filling” effect than traditional dermal filler would. By contrast, dermal filler is not regenerative.
Neither PRF injections nor EZ Gel injections will change the pigmentation (color) of the skin.
Now, to contrast PRF Injections and EZ Gel injections: the biggest difference between them is the consistency of the injectable product. EZ Gel is thick and gelatinous and produces a longer lasting volumizing effect under the skin than PRF injections do. The duration of volumization for EZ Gel injections gets longer with repeated treatments. The research done by the manufacturer of EZ Gel states that 1 treatment yields 6 weeks of volumization, 2 monthly treatments yield 3 months of volumization, and 3 monthly treatments yield 9 months of volumization. PRF injections, on the other hand, only volumize for about 24-48 hours, which is how long it takes for the serum (liquid) portion of the PRF to reabsorb into the lymphatics and go back into the circulation, leaving behind all of the healing proteins to do their regenerative work. We usually recommend PRF injections to improve skin quality of the under eyes, and not to volumize the under eyes.
The injection technique is different for PRF injections versus EZ Gel injections. After numbing, PRF injections go in with a very tiny needle, and take only a few minutes to inject. EZ Gel injections also go in after numbing, and are injected with a cannula, which is a non-sharp instrument that looks like a needle, but the gel comes out of a port on the side of the tip of the cannula. Cannula injections are considered the safest from a vascular safety perspective, and carry less potential for bruising than needle technique, although we never promise no bruising.
EZ gel treatments take about an hour and 45 minutes, and PRF injections take about an hour and 15 minutes. EZ Gel cost is higher than PRF injections due to the increased time and equipment requirements for the treatment.
